A glossy, sweet-and-savory chicken dish served over soft, fragrant rice.
Japanese Teriyaki Chicken Rice combines tender, golden-browned chicken with a rich sauce made from soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic and ginger. As the sauce simmers, it develops a glossy coating that balances salty, sweet and tangy flavors.
Served over fluffy basmati rice, the chicken creates a satisfying meal with a delicious contrast of textures. Sesame seeds and fresh spring onions add a light crunch and freshness, while steamed broccoli and vegetables make the dish colorful and well-rounded.
Ingredients
750 g basmati rice (4 cups), soaked for 20 minutes
1 kg boneless chicken thighs
2 tbsp oil
½ cup soy sauce
¼ cup honey
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp rice vinegar
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 tbsp ginger, finely chopped or grated
Sesame seeds, for garnish
Spring onions, chopped, for garnish
Steamed broccoli, for serving
Method
Wash and Soak the Rice
Wash the basmati rice thoroughly and soak it for 20 minutes. Drain the rice, then cook it until fluffy and tender. Keep it covered and warm while preparing the chicken.
Brown the Chicken
Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the boneless chicken thighs and brown them for 6–8 minutes per side, allowing the chicken to develop a golden exterior.
Prepare the Teriyaki Sauce
In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, chopped garlic and ginger. Stir well until the ingredients are evenly mixed and the sugar begins to dissolve.
Simmer the Chicken in the Sauce
Pour the prepared teriyaki mixture over the browned chicken. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes, turning the chicken so it is coated evenly in the sauce. Ensure the chicken is thoroughly cooked before serving.
Slice and Arrange
Remove the chicken from the pan and slice it into even pieces. Arrange the fluffy rice on a serving platter or in individual bowls, then place the sliced teriyaki chicken over the rice.
Garnish and Finish
Spoon some of the remaining teriyaki sauce over the chicken and rice. Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped spring onions on top for added texture, freshness and visual appeal.
Serve
Serve the Japanese Teriyaki Chicken Rice hot with steamed broccoli, mixed vegetables and cucumber salad. Offer extra teriyaki sauce on the side for those who enjoy a richer flavor. The fresh vegetables balance the sweet-savory chicken and make the meal suitable for a satisfying lunch or dinner.
